Wordhurst answers the questions people type into a search box when a word stops them: what does this mean, is there a better word, which spelling is right, what does this text mean. We give the short answer first and then the detail that makes the answer stick.

What we publish

Synonym guides that explain tone and context, alternatives for common phrases, plain-English meanings with pronunciation and origin, explanations of text slang and emojis, and the difference between words that are easy to mix up.

How a page is made

A writer drafts the page from the question readers ask. Every meaning is checked against at least two of Merriam-Webster, Cambridge Dictionary and Oxford Learner's Dictionaries. Example sentences are written by our team, not copied. Our fact-checker reviews the page before it goes live and again when we update it. Full details are in our editorial policy.
