How it works
Reading time is based on 238 words a minute, the average adult silent reading speed found in a 2019 review of 190 studies. Speaking time uses 150 words a minute, a comfortable presentation pace.

How many words is a page?
About 500 words single-spaced or 250 double-spaced in a 12-point font.
Do hyphenated words count as one?
Yes. "Well-known" counts as one word, the same as Microsoft Word.
